Apple recently announced their Self Service Repair Program allowing customers access to Apple genuine parts, tools and repair manuals.

The program is expected to launch in early 2022 in the United States and will focus on the most commonly repaired components of the iPhone 12 and 13; displays, battery and camera.

Apple announced that they will be rolling out support for M1-based Macs, additional repair options and availability in more countries throughout the next year.

How the Self Service Repair Program Will Work

Apple’s press release assures the availability of more than 200 individual parts and tools for iPhone 12 and 13 models early next year.

The user will first review a manual for the repair in question to ensure that they are comfortable with the steps first. Then the user visits the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store and places their order for necessary parts and tools. For the average consumer who wishes to repair a cracked iPhone screen, this might be an expensive endeavor since Apple requires the use of specific adhesives, specialty tools, discharge mats, unique screws and custom presses.

After fixing their own device, the user will return their used part for recycling and receive a credit towards their purchase.

Apple is clear that repairs should only be made by those comfortable with the Apple repair process.

“Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.”
