Thoughtful and Intuitive Design - Apple Continuity

The summer is flying by and before we know it students will be back to school. Preparing for the school year can be a daunting task but you can start by choosing the right tools. iPhone, iPad and Mac are thoughtfully designed and intuitive to use, giving you a consistent and user-friendly experience that ultimately improves productivity and eases frustration.

Apple devices work together to help you be even more efficient with features such as Sidecar, Continuity Markup, Phone Call and Messages synchronization between devices, AirDrop, Handoff and more!

Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar

Sidecar lets you expand your workspace by using your iPad as a second Mac display. You can now work in one app while you reference another or view your main canvas on one display while spreading out your tools and palettes on the other.

You can also mirror the screens which is perfect for sharing or presenting to others.

Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Watch.

Continuity markup lets you sign documents, correct papers or circle important details in images. Continuity Sketch allows you to sketch on your iPad or iPhone and then automatically insert it into any document on your Mac. Automatically unlock your Mac when you’re wearing your Apple watch. Copy and paste images, video and text between nearby devices.

Seamless Communication

Handoff and Continuity: Compelling reasons for students to go all Apple

Take iPhone calls on your Mac, Apple Watch or iPad. All your iPhone messages appear on your Mac too so all your conversations stay up to date. With Handoff you can start writing an email on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac. Or while browsing a web page on your Mac you can simply pick up your iPad and continue right where you left off.

Using Airdrop

AirDrop makes it simple to share files between Mac, iPhone, or iPad. With just a few steps, you can take a file from any folder and use AirDrop to send it to a nearby Mac, iPhone, or iPad. And since AirDrop is peer to peer, it works without a Wi-Fi network.

Instant Hotspot

Instant Hotspot is a great feature for people who work remotely in spaces that don’t always have reliable Wi-Fi. It works like any other hotspot, in that it allows you to use your iPhone’s cellular connection for the Internet, but it’s made simpler. From the Wi-Fi menu on your Mac, you’ll see an option to connect to your phone, no need to enter passwords or wake up your phone.

Instant Hotspot only works if you have a data plan with Personal Hotspot included. Go to Settings > Cellular and select Set Up Personal Hotspot. It’ll either help you set it up or you’ll see a message saying you need to contact your carrier.

How to Set Up Continuity

  1. First, you’ll need at least two devices on hand (one Mac and one iOS device) updated to Yosemite and iOS 8.1 or later. You’re best off with the latest operating systems for both.
  2. Make sure you’re signed into the same iCloud account on both devices.
  3. Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Turn on Bluetooth for both devices. Don’t worry about pairing them. Just turn it on.
  5. Check that Handoff is enabled on your iOS device. Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps.

And that’s it! You won’t see any verification message that it’s working. The only way to tell is to test it out.

How to Tell It’s Working

First, test Handoff from Mac to iOS. Open Messages on your Mac. Create a new message and type a few letters into the body, don’t send it quite yet.

Now, with your iPhone locked, look for an icon in the lower left corner - you should see a Message app icon. Swipe up, unlock the phone, and you should be dropped right into the Messages app with your draft loaded.

Next, try Handoff from iOS to Mac. This time open Safari on your iPhone and wait a few seconds. Now look at the dock on your Mac.

On the very far left side you should see an icon appear. Click on the icon to open the browser. Web activity is made available in the browser of your choice so you can open the tab in Chrome, Firefox or any browser.

Caring for Your Apple Devices

As a student at CSU, your Apple devices will be used daily and allow for a faster and collaborative workflow. With frequent use, there is natural wear and tear on your devices. This is normal but can also be mitigated with proper care. For information on how to care for your Apple Device, check out our featured article on Colorado State University’s collegian.com
