There is often a lot of confusion about AppleCare+, what it is, what it covers and how much it costs. In this blog post we will address a lot of the questions that we receive frequently from customers.
If you damage or lose your iPhone, then AppleCare+ will make the repair or replacement cost much less. When you’re buying a device that’s as expensive as an iPhone it’s tempting to get Apple’s extended insurance to protect it.
AppleCare+ ranges from $79-$269 and what it covers comes with expectations and conditions. So it could be what makes an iPhone unaffordable now, or what makes a repair possible down the road. It’s certainly not a casual decision to add this service on - or to ignore it!
What is the difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+?
If you are unclear about the difference between these two things, you’re not alone! AppleCare is just a basic warranty. It covers issues such as malfunctioning power buttons, dead screens or anything that fails due to a manufacturing defect. It lasts one year after your purchase date.
In comparison, AppleCare+ initially runs for two years from the date of your purchase. It is often referred to as “extended” or “extra” coverage which leads some to think that this covers two years after the first year of regular AppleCare, but this is inaccurate.
AppleCare+ basically provides a hugely reduced repair bill. There are conditions, and you can only claim two repairs per year.
There is also a version of the plan that covers theft or loss of your iPhone. Of course there are conditions that apply to this as well - but there is the possibility that you can get a replacement phone for considerably less than the price of buying a new iPhone outright.
What does iPhone AppleCare+ Cost?
The cost of AppleCare+ depends on your device and whether you choose the theft and loss coverage. The lowest cost AppleCare+ plan for iPhones without theft and loss is $79 for the 2020 iPhone SE. This is a one-time fee that covers your device for two years, there is also a monthly payment option.
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss protection for the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max is $269. If you are looking to see how much AppleCare+ is for your iPhone, you will have to look at your device, visit an Apple store, or give Apple a call.
Theft, Loss and AppleCare+
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss coverage will potentially replace your iPhone when lost or stolen. There is a $149 deductible to replace your phone and FindMy must be enabled on the stolen/lost device. AppleCare+ applies to up to two incidents of accidental damage every 12 months.
Savings on Screen Repair
If your iPhone screen is damaged and it is covered with AppleCare+, Apple will replace it for $29. The plan allows you up to four repairs over the term - two per each of the two years.
Savings on Other Repairs
Other than screen damage, AppleCare+ describes almost all other repairs as “any other accidental damage.” It’s a broad category which is why the costs and savings are large. Accidental damage repair with AppleCare+ costs $99.
Battery Replacement
If your battery should need replacing during your two year period, Apple will do it for free. If you are out of coverage, it will cost anywhere from $50-$70 to replace.
How to Buy
There are several ways to purchase AppleCare+.
- Buy it with your new iPhone
- Buy it within 60 days of purchase by: Going to Settings > General > About and choose AppleCare+ Coverage Available, Purchasing Online, Purchasing at an Apple Store, or Purchasing over the phone.
Should I Add AppleCare+ to My iPhone?
If you never claim on AppleCare+ then it would appear to be wasted because you received no benefits from the fee.
If you are likely to have more than two incidents of damage in the first two years of owning your iPhone, then the plan is worth it. Of course this cannot be predicted but there is also another aspect to be considered: peace of mind.
